Saudade or the love that remains – a unique Portuguese word with no translation into another language. It is embedded with romantic values. In its essence it means the longing for someone or something loved. In Portugal’s traditional song, Fado, the word has a deep nostalgic connotation: a longing for a lost love.

Saudade is the product of over twenty years of Pedro da Costa Felgueiras living in London and travelling into deep corners of secret Portugal. He brings his experience of the last two decades of working with colour and historic materials as well as his design and art projects into Saudade. From the very beginning of living in London, in 1990, Pedro started bringing these products back from his native Portugal. Objects sometimes chosen for their never-changing packaging, sometimes just because they recall the sunshine of childhood or evoke popular Portuguese ideals. Above all, Saudade products are selected for their strong connection to Pedro’s labour intensive own work and the way these pieces are still being hand produced.

Miraculously, Portugal seems to have maintained the quality of handmade manufacturing with minimal mechanical assistance. Knowledge is passed down the generations, from father to son, from employee to employee, with a persistence that stands apart from the over-industrialization of the rest of Europe.

This in turn, adds intrinsic value and results in the production of handmade objects of great quality. All the objects selected are of an artisanal production, made by factories that are now museums to a bygone way of living. This strong artisanal tradition has a great influence in defining Pedro’s aesthetic sensibility.

As well as having exclusive colour combinations of existing products for Saudade-shop, Pedro presents these objects in new modern, design contexts. His sharp eye for colour, play an essential role when selecting, curating and presenting products for the pop-up events and concessions he is involved with.  They are presented with a London twist – art with the sweetness of a nation’s expressiveness and longing.
