Whole Filigree Bead Cufflinks – Gold

Handmade exclusively for us in sterling silver by a jewellery workshop in the north of Portugal. These cufflinks were later finished by Pedro using resin and pigment before being gold plated.

This ‘Viana’ Bead is the most successful and enduring expression of filigree beads. It represents a partridge eye, an representation of plenty.

Filigree is thought to have been brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Phoenicians and it has been in continuous production in the north of Portugal ever since, although traces of this age-old work can be found all over Iberia, the north has kept a close connection with this ancient craft as a symbol of social status and wealth as it was always made in precious gold. Typically, in this region, brides are laden with gold chains, filigree hearts and beads on top of their black dresses, not white. The contrast with the black attire and the rich, intricate jewellery produces a stunning luminous contrast.
