Portuguese goods curated by Pedro da Costa Felgueiras

Swallow or “Andorinha”

Known to be brave and faithful, these jolly birds have been part of Portugal’s pottery tradition since 1891, when Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro modeled some in several different sizes for the ‘Mónaco’ tobacco shop in downtown Lisbon. They can still be appreciated in the exact same place as they were first hung. Imbedded with countless poetic meanings, these ceramic birds were quickly adopted as decoration on façades and domestic interiors throughout the country, representing the desire for their return and the heralding of spring. Hand painted and glazed faience.
