Silver Scallop Shell Necklace

Much of Portugal’s inspired either by the ocean or religion. The scallop shell is closely connected to the Cross of Saint James and is worn as a symbol of faith and achievement. Symbolically, the scallop shell is believed to signify the rebirth of a person, their resurrection, and so the overcoming of ego to make way for a more simple and humble self supposedly one of the great lessons of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. However, the shell as a motif can be traced back to before the coming of Christianity to the Iberian peninsula, as a symbol of fertility.
