Ceramic Sausage or “Chouriço”

A chouriço is a rustic sausage similar to the Spanish chorizo, it has been part of the Portuguese diet for centuries and does not contain chilli spices like those preferred by the Spaniards and Latin Americans.

This is yet another national food and was depicted in popular crafts as an symbol of plenty. These chouriços are individually hand-shaped, hand-finished and smeared with a special wax, which gives them a semi-matte surface. They used to be found decorating kitchens instead of the real sausages as they have the advantage of never going off.
