Ram’s Toothpick Holder

Rams are a common and celebrated animal in Portuguese lands, most often depicted grazing the soil in a very calm, peaceful manner.

In medieval Portugal, a cottage industry developed to produce straightforward handmade toothpicks, and these splints of orange wood gained a reputation for being the best in the world and toothpicks handmade in the Portuguese tradition were common before being replaced by mass-produced American versions.

Still very common in Portugal, restaurants always have  a tiny container for these most insignificant of objects but this charming hand painted holder by Bordallo Pinheiro means they cannot be overlooked.
