Known in Portugal as Fio do Norte (northern twine), this is used by shoemakers and upholsters. It is also known as telephone twine as it was widely used by children to construct a primitive telephone device by knotting both ends to plastic yogurt tubs or empty tins.
Still produced in Portugal from natural sisal, jute or linen, it is still widely used for tying old fashion parcels in timeworn shops in Lisbon.
