Filigree is thought to have been brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Phoenicians and it has been in continuous production in the north of Portugal since then. Although traces of this kind of work can be found all over the country, the north has kept a close connection with this ancient craft as a symbol of social status and wealth as it was always made in precious gold. Typically, in this region, brides are laden with gold chains, filigree hearts and beads on top of their black (not white) dresses. The contrast with thir black attire and the rich, intricate gold jewellery produces a stunning luminous contrast.
Within the Portuguese territory the heart motif can be found in most traditional jewellery work and has became an emblem of the country itself. It is also customarily given as a gift in gold or silver as a symbol of love.
