Elvas Plums (Ameixas d’Elvas)

Ameixas d’Elvas were firstly confectioned in convents by dedicated nuns and destined to Portuguese aristocratic families’ tables, for festive occasions since the 1500’s. Popularized in Britain after being introduced by Port merchants in the 1800’s, Elvas plums were soon established as a Christmas favourite in this country. Agatha Christie mentions them in the short story The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding.

Greenish in colour, these plums are cultivated in the upper Alentejo region of Portugal. Its ideal microclimate gives these plums their characteristic taste and allows for their production free of chemicals. They are a DOP or Protected Designation of Origin in the European Community. They are only available between October and April and are ideal to accompany the cheese board at the end of a meal.

We now, for the first time,  also have the figs produced by the same company.
