Bull Fighter Toothpick Holder

Depicting a bull fighter – Forcado, who is a member of a team that performs the pega de caras (“face catch”), the leap onto the bull’s horns, the final event in a typical Portugal bullfight. Forcados were usually brave people from lower classes who, to this day, practise their art through amateur, non professional associations.

In medieval Portugal, a cottage industry developed to produce straightforward handmade toothpicks. These splints of orangewood  gained a reputation for being the best in the world. Handmade in the Portuguese tradition were common before being replaced by mass-produced American versions. Still very common in Portugal, restaurants always have a tiny container for these most insignificant of objects but this hand painted holder by Bordallo Pinheiro means they cannot be overlooked!
